A little background:
In the late 60’s, UNIX was developed by members of the Multics team at Bell Labs. Many of the team also had a hand in developing the C programming language. The UNIX today is not the work of a couple of programmers but taps into the many organizations, institutes, and individuals who contribute significant additions to the UNIX now know today.
UNIX is primarily a command line oriented operating system. You can access graphic oriented X-window which will give the user a windows type experience but most users rely on the command prompt day-to-day.
Linux, released in March of 1994, is an operating system kernel originally written by Linus Torvalds based on the UNIX kernel. Over the years a great many utilities and libraries have been combined to form a solid operating system similar to UNIX. Linux, unlike many freely available software programs, provides extensive online information on subjects such configuring and installing the operating system for a wide variety of PCs and peripherals.
